Red Oaks
The photo is of a red oak by our driveway. I noticed this year it seems to be just the red oaks that keep their leaves in winter. I’ve never really noticed when the leaves drop. This year I’m watching.
From what I understand, all oaks fall into two catagories, red or white. Red have sharp points and lobes on their leaves and white are rounded. White oaks, which include burr oaks, are slower growing.
Last fall I saved some acorns from the squirrels to see if I could grow them. We’ll see how that works out.
A related note:
Every year the Goodhue County Soil and Water Conservation District sells trees for spring planting. The trees come in bundles of 25 “seedlings” or “transplants.” I’m told the difference is that transplants are bigger than seedlings. You can get shrubs and deciduous and coniferous trees. I counted over thirty varities, with four different kinds of oaks.
